This is a beautiful specimen of Hyalite Opal on Smoky Quartz, from the famous Erongo Mountains in Namibia. The translucent, glass-like coating crusting over the smoky quartz is Hyalite Opal (also known as Muller's glass). Under normal light, hyalite opal looks completely clear or watery, but when hit with a shortwave or longwave UV light, it bursts into an electric radioactive-green color. This intense fluorescence is caused by trace amounts of uranyl ions (uranium impurities) trapped within the silica structure of the opal as it crystallized. Erongo specimens are world-famous for their unique mineral associations.
