Mariposa calcite (also known as "butterfly" calcite) is a rare, highly lustrous variety of calcite notable for its unique two-phase crystal growth. Featuring caramel-colored rhombohedral overgrowths with dark internal phantoms, it is primarily sourced from the Buena Tierra and El Potosi mines in the Santa Eulalia district of Chihuahua, Mexico. It is highly sought after by mineral collectors because the extraction process is deeply laborious and dangerous, making new finds increasingly uncommon.
