Herkimer Diamond, Cherry Herk from Fonda Mountain, New York 40g H5261021

A fantastic example of a heavily iron-stained, skeletal cluster.  This specimen is heavily dominated by deep, rich iron-oxide (hematite and limonite) coatings and internal staining which provides the "cherry"aesthetic. 

The dramatic brick-red and burnt-orange iron coating covers a large portion of the specimen's complex faces forming a deep, uniform skin rather than just a dirty film. Also, rather than a simple single point, this is an intricate cluster of intergrown, overlapping crystals. The jagged, step-growth faces trap the iron pocket mud beautifully, creating massive texture and depth.  Underneath the heavy red exterior, you can see highly reflective, glass-like quartz structures peeking through. This contrast gives the piece a "raw crystal pocket" look.

Herkimer Diamonds formed in the earth nearly 500 million years ago in crystal pockets within ancient dolostone. Their unique conditions of formation—low-pressure hydrothermal fluids crystallizing slowly in hollow pockets—allowed for: Natural double terminations (points at both ends), symbolizing energy flow in and out Extraordinary internal clarity, often gem-grade and water-clear rainbow inclusions, carbon inclusions (anthraxolite), enhydros. Herkimer Diamonds are found exclusively in the Herkimer region of New York, in this case, from Fonda Mountain, making them highly collectible. Yes, you can find quartz anywhere, however these Herkimer Diamond Quartz are ONLY in the Herkimer in upper New York from Fonda Mountain.
